    Description

What a story !!!   They said it was a dud !!   Geffen Records was walking away because it only sold 200,000 copies out of the box.  It debuted at 182 on the Billboard Top 200.   MTV wouldn't play a video.  Radio stations wouldn't play GNR's music.   They were too busy with U2, Aerosmith and Def.
The original cover was rejected and sent back to the fulfillment warehouses.  It showed a robotic rapist being punished by a metallic avenger.  That artwork was then put INSIDE the album and the Celtic Cross you see now took its place with 5 skulls depicted each of the band members....speaking of which were finally in place:  The classic lineup was Axl Rose,  Duff McKagan, Slash, Steven Adler and Izzy Stradlin.
THE HERO:  Geffen's GM Al Coury convinced MTV to play the "Welcome to the Jungle"  video at least one time three nights in a row.  After radio stations wouldn't play the song and MTV had rejected the video,
    Welcome to the Jungle
immediately became the most requested video on MTV and the radio stations followed.  A full year after its release,
    APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION
jumped to #1 on Billboard and stayed on the charts for a whopping 147 weeks.  Guns N' Roses was "made."  It's listed on every list  as one of "...the greatest"  album on this or that list.
The award was made in 2008 to celebrate 18-million sales in the U.S.,  but it is estimated that more than 30+ million albums have been sold worldwide.
Kenneth Kittinger   (Google  "Ken Kittinger Gold Records")  was the premier awards maker on Music Row in Nashville for nearly 5 decades.  His estate held some 5,000 items of memorabilia,  including awards and hand-signed items from country, rock,  gospel and jazz from virtually every record label who he worked with over those 50 years.
