If viewing on a phone/tablet you need to manually navigate to the FULL LISTING (tap "read more" or "item description" etc). .The note in the box gives the back story, but NOTE there is NO SCRAPBOOK (just this box), I bought this from another dealer that was going through his storage. The stamp on the bottom of the box made me question the vintage claimed by the note, if not for that note I wouldn't have looked twice at this box, but maybe that marking is consistent with the age claimed on the note. The box lid is 8-3/8" wide and about 6" deep. Total height is 2.5". The box interior is 6.75" x 4.25" x 1.75". The note shows discoloring and also has some dyed straw that is claimed to be the decorative material on the box (the note reads that the box and whatever the scrapbook had been was found in storage in Downieville CA in 1981). The box is clearly covered with colored materials then it looks like it was varnish..continued in FULL LISTING

--- The note in the box gives the back story, but NOTE there is NO SCRAPBOOK (just this box), I bought this from another dealer that was going through his storage.  The stamp on the bottom of the box made me question the vintage claimed by the note, if not for that note I wouldn't have looked twice at this box, but maybe that marking is consistent with the age claimed on the note (I have no information other than what is on the note card). The box is clearly covered with colored materials then it looks like it was varnished.  A few things or more are possible, all of the outer decoration may not have been done by the POW's, the box may already have had inlay or paint designs that were then covered or enhanced by the POW's, maybe it is all their work?  Anyway, it just is what it is, a note in a box with some applied materials.   The front right corner has a bit of the strips lifting.  The stamp on the bottom of the box reads Ukranian Popular Art Limited Liability Company Die Ukrainis.... Volkskunet? G.M.B.H. Ludwigsburg.  Hmmm...... (that's my comment).
