    Description

The British were impressed with the power and accuracy of the Mauser in the hands of Boer marksmen during the Boer War of the early 20th century. To augment their long arm arsenal consisting mainly of the SMLE Enfield, the British set about developing and adopting their own rifle and cartridge based on the Mauser design. Production contracts for the resulting P-14 Enfield rifle were let to three American companies at the outbreak of WW1: Winchester, Remington, and Eddystone. When the United States entered the Great War in 1917, the US Army faced an immediate shortage of Springfield rifles to equip its "doughboys" shipping out for the trenches "over there". Remington was already producing the P-14 Enfield for the British, so rather than retool the factory to make Springfields, the caliber was simply switched over to .30-06, and the rifle was taken into US service as the M-1917 "American" Enfield. British P-14 and US M-1917 Enfield rifles have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading Charles R. Stratton to write an informative technical guide/reference book on the subject in 2000, revised and expanded into a second edition in 2007. This "BRITISH ENFIELD RIFLES VOL. 4 PATTERN 1914 & US M-1917" WW1 GUN REFERENCE BOOK is in near mint, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in near mint shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts elegantly illustrated softcovers, and sports 148 pages full of descriptive text, (a few) period pictures, and black and white photographs (as well as diagrams) of British P-14 and US M-1917 Enfield rifle stocks, hand guards, butt plates, breech bolts, trigger guards, rear sights, barrels, front sights, nose caps, proof and inspection marks, serial numbers, precise measurements and correct details to look for in all of those parts, slings, bayonets, scabbards, and much, much more.
